Team USA Wins Basketball Gold, Beats Spain, Gets Mike Krzyzewski To Do Something He's Never Done Before [Video]

Aug 12, 2012 1:31 PM

Team USA Wins Basketball Gold, Beats Spain, Gets Mike Krzyzewski To Do Something He's Never Done Before Team USA Wins Basketball Gold, Beats Spain, Gets Mike Krzyzewski To Do Something He's Never Done Before Gold for the 2012 Dream Team proved to be a bit more elusive than expected, as foul trouble and a pesky Spanish team led to a 107-100 win, one locked up by a clever Chris Paul drive that led to coach Mike Krzyzewski leaping into the air as if he'd just purchased a Toyota. He's stepping down after today to allow someone else to lead Team USA.

Kevin Durant scored 30 and LeBron James poured in 19 in joining Michael Jordan as the only basketball players in history to win an NBA MVP, NBA Championship, and Olympic gold medal in the same year. Pau Gasol paced Spain with 24 points and suffered a nasty gash on the face after being fouled hard by LeBron James.

This is a Deadspin Video, in which strange sports moments are slowed down to ridiculous speeds and matched with indie music. This video features "Very Peculiar Feeling" by Allen Clapp. See previous episodes here.

A Competitor In New York's First Ironman Triathlon Died In The Hudson River [Ironman Triathlon]

A Competitor In New York's First Ironman Triathlon Died In The Hudson RiverDuring the swim portion of the inaugural New York City Ironman Triathlon, which began 7 a.m. Saturday morning, a 43-year-old man experienced what most are calling "medical distress" or "a medical problem." He was pulled from the water and taken to a hospital, but did not survive. Autopsy results are pending and the man's identity has not been released. The Ironman triathlon is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles of bicycling, and a 26.2 mile run, in that order. The swimming portion of the race took the eventual winner, Jordan Rapp, 41 minutes and 45 seconds.

The death was preceded by (though probably unrelated to) a strange series of events leading up to the race: on August 9, the AP reported, "Partly treated sewage began gushing into the Hudson River," and that "officials warned against direct contact with the water." The water was chlorinated, but with a massive sewage leak only 15 miles north from the eventual race location (in a river that runs north-south), it seemed that the weekend's Ironman, eight years in the making according to organizers, was in significant danger of being canceled. The same article said that the discharge was expected to continue into the next day, and wind up with "millions of gallons" of raw sewage in the Hudson. Nonetheless, August 10 saw the NYC Department of Environmental Protection give the go-ahead after conducting a series of water quality tests, and the race was saved.

Saturday's untimely death was not the first in even the recent history of triathlons in New York; while this was the first inaugural Ironman United States Championship event to be held in the city, last summer's Nautica New York City Triathlon (unaffiliated with the Ironman) led to two deaths, during the same portion of the event, in the same river. The AP reports, "After a spate of five deaths around the country in two months last summer, a governing body for the sport, USA Triathlon, created a task force to examine the fatalities." After Saturday, they have another on the docket.

New England Patriots To Work Out Plaxico Burress [Plaxico Burress]

Aug 12, 2012 4:56 PM

New England Patriots To Work Out Plaxico Burress Deadspin asks and Bob Kraft delivers. Maybe. After biting on Jerry Jones's double move earlier in the week, Plaxico is finally making his first team visit of the year and may end up with a rival to his two most recent organizations.

The Patriots have made a habit of exploiting the market inefficiency that is the past-his-prime-prima donna-wideout-that-teams-no-longer-want-to deal-with, so this sort of makes a lot sense.

Rory McIlroy Wins PGA Championship [Video]

Aug 12, 2012 7:05 PM

Rory McIlroy Wins PGA Championship It kind of got forgotten among the Olympic hullabaloo, but the PGA Championship, golf's final major of the season, was this weekend, and Rory McIlroy is your winner.

Much like at last year's U.S. Open, it seemed like McIlroy just couldn't be stopped. His eight-stroke margin of victory is the largest ever in the PGA Championship. A few other guys were in contention earlier in the week, but no one could catch Rory. Tiger Woods was tied for the lead after Friday's round, but mercifully spared us of all the "Is Tiger back?" columns by shooting 74 and 72 in the final two rounds. Tiger failed to break par in eight weekend rounds at majors this year. Carl Pettersson played in the final group with McIlroy today, but his hopes for a victory were dashed when he was assessed a two-shot penalty on the first hole for moving a loose impediment in a hazard.

This tournament was all about McIlroy, though. He showed just how dominant he can be when he's on the top of his game.

Ryan Hall Pulled Up Lame In The Men's Marathon [Video]

Ryan Hall Pulled Up Lame In The Men's Marathon "Sure, God made the universe," Jake Mooney noted in this space back before the Olympics started, "but can he coach an American marathoner to Olympic gold?"

Nope, or at least not this one. Ryan Hall, who had attracted attention both for being one of the better American marathoners over the past few years and for being, let's say, "uniquely spiritual," or, actually, let's go with, "intensely religious to the detriment of his athletic career," crapped out of the men's marathon in London this morning at mile 11 with tightness in his left right hamstring. Gold went to Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda. The only US runner to finish, Mebrahtom Keflezighi, came in fourth.

Hall split with his (non-eternal) running coach in 2010 and actually improved afterward; that year, he became the first American to run a a sub-2:05 marathon. Hall has said that God sometimes speaks to him, and indeed, tells him pretty specific times and distances to run during his training. He's struggled with the contrast between his own competitive edge and the Christian themes of compassion and forgiveness, and told the New Yorker in 2008, "I just have a hard time seeing Christ being competitive."

As for today's disappointment, Hall is bummed but unshaken:

God was unavailable for comment.

America won both the gold (46) and overall (104) medal counts. These colors do not bleed, China. [Medal Count]

The Game Is The Same And The Rules Don't Change—So Why Do The Controls? [Stick Jockey]

The Game is the Same and the Rules Don't Change—So Why Do the Controls? In basketball, it was the three-point line, or the reintroduction of the zone defense. In baseball, it's the designated hitter, or an All-Star game played for stakes. In American football, it's instant replay, or the two-point conversion, or moving the goal posts to the back of the end zone. All sports have confronted and incorporated epochal changes in how they are played, many within our lifetimes.

Sports video games seem to do it every year.

Friday, 2K Sports revealed a revision to the controls in NBA 2K13, a remarkable midstream change for a game that hasn't had a competitor since 2010. In quick summary, the left trigger on a console controller last year initiated freestyle ballhandling moves with a corresponding gesture on the left thumbstick. Now the left trigger press is responsible for shooting once you push on the right thumbstick. A right thumbstick gesture alone will create a ballhandling move.

To those who don't play this series, the significance of the change may be hard to grasp. For those who have played it for several years, though, it's akin to re-learning the basic, physical fundamentals of playing basketball before tip-off of the next season.

It seems that only sports video games are faced with this prospect, even though other series—Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty most notably—release every year and confront the same obligation to grow their audience in the mainstream.

Why sports games have to reinvent their controls annually, I don't know. Puppeteering a guy dribbling or throwing a baseball would seem to be a basically constant thing in a video game compared to a guy hucking a grenade or acrobatically slashing his foe across his torso. Yet the latter two acts have undergone less change on a video game controller in their respective series, going back more than five years.

Though it is perceived as a year-in-year-out consistent performer, MLB The Show is maybe the most notorious case, with wholesale changes to its pitching systems in each of the past two years. The curveball has been in existence since at least 1870. How you throw it in The Show has been different in 2010, 2011 and 2012, thanks to the game's pitching meter, analog pitching and, now, "pulse pitching" systems. All three require a discrete sense of familiarity and timing to throw a breaking pitch accurately.

In basketball, I expect to explode naturally off of a fake toward the basket. It's as instinctual to a slashing guard as it is to an assassin.

The difference is that MLB The Show, to its great credit, has probably the most broadly accommodating control systems in a console sports simulation. The old command sets can still be enabled in the current version of the game. Those who have played this series since 2009 can still adjust its preferences and control the game the way they've always played it, even in online multiplayer.

NBA 2K13, however, will not include a legacy control set, even though it is presumably making these changes for the same reason—accessibility to and accommodation of a larger audience. Both NBA 2K and MLB The Show have been lauded for being highly technical depictions of a real sport while being criticized for placing a high barrier to its enjoyment before casually interested fans.

NBA 2K13, despite being the clear and dominant leader in basketball video games, still is under enormous pressure to expand its audience. The drafting of hip-hop entrepreneur Jay-Z, to be the game's executive producer, speaks to that mandate. There's a difference, though, when you're selling a game based on superheroic acts no one performs in real life, and one attempting to replicate performances seen every day. Familiarity, in this case, breeds expectation, if not a false sense of expertise.

In Assassin's Creed, I don't know or necessarily care what kind of animations Altäir or Ezio or Connor could or should branch out of when he's engaging an enemy, because I don't watch knife fighting on ESPN or engage in it down at the Y. This, however, is a constant talking point in sports video games, basketball particularly. In one-on-one basketball, yeah, I have a total expectation of being able to naturally change my player's dribble and explode off of a fake toward the basket, because that is an act just as instinctual to the slashing guard as it is to an assassin.

In a video game I'm supposed to be portraying both, but in a sports video game, I'm approaching the role with a deeper familiarity, if only visual. And a non-gamer, i.e. the new, unconverted customer who watches Kevin Durant or Blake Griffin on TV, has the same expectation, if not more.

***

I've had no hands-on time with NBA 2K13 but the description of its new controls already appeals to me. Anyone can take a shot in basketball; creating one is much more difficult. Movement in a sport like basketball involves both halves of your body, upper and lower. It seems more instinctive to split control of that, rather than your shooting behavior, between two sticks. Some have compared the new concept in NBA 2K13 to NHL's skating and stick-handling system. I've heard others reference NBA Live 10.

None of this is necessarily a bad thing, nor is refining the controls to invite a larger audience. But at some point year-to-year revisions disrupt the base population more than they grow a new one. Sports culture venerates the knowledge and application of fundamental skills, yet sports video games seem to abandon and remake them year-to-year.

Stick Jockey is Kotaku's column on sports video games. It appears weekends. The Game is the Same and the Rules Don't Change—So Why Do the Controls?

Tough to blame Netflix on this one, though. In a documentary category you've got similars including notorious baseball man Ken Burns, an Idiot and American revolutionaries. Of course that all adds up to Yankees-Red Sox.

Is Ian Thorpe Gay? [Gay Or Not Gay]

Is Ian Thorpe Gay?Maybe, sort of:

Thorpe is not homosexual, I am assured, but this will not stop people on the internet speculating about his svelte looks, cultured interests and friendships.

"I tick all the boxes," he admits. "There is no way I can answer this. It really has just got to the stage when I say, 'whatever'. It's not a big deal for me. It doesn't impact on my life what people think.

"What I don't like about it is that people think I'm being dishonest. That's what's so hurtful in all of this. I don't live my life as an open book, but what I do say, I don't retract. That is me."

That's from a Daily Telegraph profile that went up yesterday, succinctly titled, "Ian Thorpe: Am I gay? It's at the point where I just say 'whatever.'" It's a good read all around—Thorpe has apparently made a good impression as a swimming analyst for the BBC this summer ("the philosopher king of the BBC sofa," says the Telegraph), the article very Britishly describes him as "grippingly attractive," he wears Armani exclusively, he's trying to make a comeback in time for the world championships in Barcelona next year, he's obsessed with gardening and cooking, he claims to have "one of the highest selling sports drinks in Japan"—you know, standard athlete stuff. If you didn't have a chance to see any of Thorpe's work for the BBC (as I didn't), it seems like he did commendable work: in this clip, he looks like a candid and fluent analyst while talking Yi Shiwen and doping in swimming.

Whoever wrote the headline, though, understood which part of the story is news: Thorpe won't give a clear answer about sexual preferences—there may not be one—but when asked point-blank to affirm or deny that he was gay, Thorpe didn't quite say "no." His agent said "no," but Thorpe said, "I tick all the boxes." Maybe Thorpe is a practitioner of the hedonistic pansexuality of the rich and beautiful about which we roly-poly proletarians occasionally hear whispers (which is sort of what "I tick all the boxes" sounds like coming from any celebrity); maybe it's something more defined and relatable. Thorpe also may be straight, as his agent insists, but then it seems fair to wonder why a question about his sexual orientation would prompt him to say, "There's no way I can answer this."

If he's on the verge of being openly gay or bisexual, he'd automatically become one of the most prominent out athletes in the world. A Google search for gay athletes turns up a few lonely Yahoo Answers pages and this hilariously low-tech ESPN Outside the Lines article from 1998 which features, alone among names you might recognize, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, and Greg Louganis twice. Thorpe, though, was Michael Phelps back when Michael Phelps couldn't keep track of his retainer: he won 3 golds and two silvers at his hometown Games in Sydney in 2000, six gold medals at the 2001 world championships, and picked up another two Olympic golds at the 2004 Athens Games. Per Wikipedia, Thorpe won the 400m freestyle "at every Olympic, World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific Swimming Championships" from 1998 to 2004.

The Telegraph reports that Thorpe (despite not living his life "as an open book") is working on an autobiography which he says will feature "more than one revelation."

Russia Accuses Olympic Boxing Of Shadiness [London Olympics]

Russia Accuses Olympic Boxing Of ShadinessAt this point, boxing couldn't even beat its rap as a sham if it paid off every person who ever thought about boxing. Things are especially bad for your sport, though, when the Russians are accusing you of being below board. That's exactly what Russian sports minister, Vitaly Mutko has said about the London Olympics, specifically lamenting the Russian results in both men's and women's boxing.

"The Brits are just as [bad] as [the Chinese] in Beijing," Mutko told Russian media on Saturday. "Here in London everyone wants the British to win. They have a very strong political support."

"Three of our boxers had been prevented from reaching the final," Mutko said, referring to the light-flyweight David Ayrapetyan, flyweight Misha Aloian and welterweight Andrei Zamkovoy, who lost their semi-final bouts. Ayrapetyan lost to Thailand's Kaeo Pongprayoon 13-12, Aloian lost to Mongolia's Tugstsogt Nyambayar 15-11, while Zamkovoy lost to Kazakhstan's Serik Sapiyev 18-12.

I know what you're thinking. "Prevented from reaching the final?" That does sound shady, but if you do a google translate for Paranoid Russian, it just means "lost."

Mutko added that Britain's boxers may have benefited by a partisan home crowd swaying the judges. "[The British] are planning a happy end in boxing tomorrow," he said after three British men advanced to Sunday's finals.

Expect Olympic organizers to kick Mutko out of the arena shortly.

Little League Team Advances To World Series On Sketchy Third-Base Appeal [Video]

Aug 12, 2012 10:00 AM

Little League Team Advances To World Series On Sketchy Third-Base Appeal Little League Team Advances To World Series On Sketchy Third-Base Appeal The team from Petaluma, California advanced to the Little League World Series last night after escaping from a sixth-inning rally by their Nanakuli, Hawaii opponents with an appeal to third base that a Hawaiian runner missed the bag. The score was 7-6 Petaluma at the time, with the Northern California team needing one more out to secure victory.

The umpire accepted the appeal, called the runner out, and the game was over—sparking a wild celebration from the representatives of Northern California and heartbreak on the faces of the Hawaiian representatives.

ESPN's broadcast of the game wasn't the cleanest as might be expected for a regional baseball game involving 12-year-olds, so it's tough to tell if the runner actually touched the base:

It's worth asking, too, if this is really how a children's baseball game should end. (Also worth asking: whether ESPN should be making millions off unpaid children's labor.) Of course, it's entirely possible the Petaluma team would have retired the next batter and ended the game anyway, making this all moot.

Hawaii manager Danny Stephens says he didn't see the runner miss third base, and told the San Bernadino Sun:

I'd really like to see a replay on that, but there are a lot of replays in the tournament I'd like to see.

Here's your replay, Danny. I don't think it will provide many answers.

From what we can tell: there will some kind of ferris wheel, Allesandra Ambrosio will be holding or is currently holding something shiny, Ludcaris and Vin Diesel may be in the house, and everything is bathed in an eerie blue light.
