This Classy T-Shirt Is Available At A Penn State Student Book Store [Penn State Nittany Lions]

This Classy T-Shirt Is Available At A Penn State Student Book StoreOnward State's Kevin Horne is on a field trip to the (non-university-affiliated*) Student Book Store in State College, tweeting pics as he goes. Maybe you'd like a framed photo of the Joe Paterno statue? It'd go great with this t-shirt, rebranding the NCAA the "National Communist Athletic Association."

The shirt is made by Smack Apparel, which apparently has trashy shirts for fans of any team, college or pro. It's there we find the N[hammer & sickle]AA shirt, and see what's on the back:

"Overstepping Their Bounds And Punishing The Innocent Since 1906"

This Classy T-Shirt Is Available At A Penn State Student Book Store

There's some weird fine print on the website too:

Warning: This shirt is not licensed or endorsed by any institution or organization. Its sole purpose is to enable the individual wearing it to express the message contained on it.

Obviously the shirt isn't university-approved, and college stores in every town have sales racks lined with trashy stuff like this. But why would anyone ever buy this? If you wear this shirt outside of State College, you're never going to hear the end of it, and could possibly be physically assaulted. So why bother preaching to the choir in t-shirt form? Also, you have no idea what Communism is, do you?

UPDATE: There seems to be some confusion, but we want to emphasize that this is a completely independent store, not affiliated with the university in any way. I've tweaked some language to make that clearer. The story is not that Penn State itself is selling these shirts; it's that they even exist, which is bad enough.

Penn State Is Making Some Changes To Its Football Uniforms [Penn State Scandal]

Aug 7, 2012 4:30 PM

Penn State Is Making Some Changes To Its Football UniformsPenn State kept its football uniforms remarkably plain over the years (except for the right price), but those famous blue and white duds are getting a slight makeover this fall, the school announced today. Individual players' names will now appear on the backs of the jerseys, and there will also be a blue ribbon to show support for victims of child abuse:

Coach [Bill] O'Brien says after speaking with some members of the team, they made the decision together to add names to the uniforms. Players indicated the names on their jerseys also mean they will hold each other accountable to uphold the traditions of Penn State football, both on and off the field.

"We want our fans to know and recognize these young men," O'Brien said. "They have stuck together during tough times, and I commend them for the leadership they have shown."

Of course, displaying the names on the back also makes it easier to keep track of which players elected not to transfer as a result of the NCAA sanctions.

And Now The Paterno Family Is Appealing The NCAA Sanctions Themselves [Penn State Scandal]

Aug 3, 2012 4:50 PM

And Now The Paterno Family Is Appealing The NCAA Sanctions ThemselvesOnward State has the complete letter the family sent this afternoon to the NCAA, but here's the gist:

The estate undertakes this appeal to redress the enormous damage done to Penn State, the State College community, former, current and future student and student athletes, Joe Paterno and certain others involved, as a result of the unprecedented actions taken by the NCAA.

As will become evident in a thorough and impartial review, the NCAA acted hastily and without any regard for due process.

Penn State "Adequately Covered" For Impending Civil Suits [Penn State Scandal]

Jul 28, 2012 3:40 PM

Penn State "Adequately Covered" For Impending Civil SuitsPenn State president Rodney Erickson recently sat down with Bob Schieffer of CBS's Face The Nation program for an interview that will be aired tomorrow. The clip below focuses on the looming civil suits against Penn State and the school's preparedness to handle them.

With the recent discovery of the alleged victim from the shower scene witnessed by Mike McQueary, Penn State is snapping into action. In the interview, Erickson basically begs the victims not to take the school to court, making it clear that Penn State is actively trying to settle all claims before yet another jury ever gets to hear all the lurid details of the school's total failure to deal with Jerry Sandusky.

Erickson says Penn State is insured and has "adequate" protection to pay out on the various suits. The school is hoping to settle the claims "as quickly as possible" so as to avoid "drag[ing] victims through another round of court cases."

Such a strategy also avoids dragging the school in front of more angry jurors, this time with a chance to cut a check for someone.

The Freeh Group Denies Anyone From The Freeh Group Discussed The NCAA's Use Of The Freeh Group's Investigation Of Penn State [Death To The Ncaa]

Jul 27, 2012 5:55 PM

The Freeh Group Denies Anyone From The Freeh Group Discussed The NCAA's Use Of The Freeh Group's Investigation Of Penn StateJust got the following in my inbox a few minutes ago, which is a reference to this:

Attributable to a spokesperson for the Freeh Group:

"The Freeh Group emphatically stated that no member of its investigative team spoke to The Chronicle of Higher Education for its story. The Freeh Group has no comment on the NCAA's use of the Report."

Translation: Emphatically, no one from the Freeh Group will admit to being the person who spoke to the Chronicle of Higher Education for its story.
